Thinking of Hiring a Professional Coach?

Thinking of Hiring a Professional Coach?

What does a coach actually do?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”

Let’s break that definition down:

A coach will work in partnership with the client (Coachee).

A coach will work with the client to discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve.

The coach will support and facilitate a process self-discovery for the client.

The coach will ask powerful questions to provoke new thinking, ideas and client generated solutions and strategies.

The coach will always work in the best interests of the client and this may include challenging the client and holding the client responsible and accountable.

The coach helps the client to create clarity, understand where they are and more importantly recognise and take appropriate actions to get them to where they want to be.

Thinking About Hiring A Coach?

The coaching industry is, as yet, unregulated. This means that anyone can call themselves a coach. However, good coaches will be able to demonstrate and evidence their capability, competence and credibility and good coaches acting ethically will always be happy to do so – Always ask:

Before engaging a coach, consider asking the following questions: Whom did you train with? What coach training have you completed? Are you a member of any coaching organization? What coach qualifications do you have? What coaching certification or credentials do you have? What coaching experience do you have? What Code of Ethics do you subscribe to and follow? Can you share examples of client results (Bear in mind that coaches are bound by strict coach/client confidentiality, so any results should not be attributed to a specific client)? What client testimonials can you share? Do you have a coach? Do you have a coach supervisor?

Do you have any other skills i.e. Advanced coaching skills, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) etc.?
